FAQ
What subjects does Jump Start tutor?
Our tutors are familiar with the New Zealand curriculum, including all three qualification systems, and teach from years 9-13.
We offer tuition in a range of subjects, with many of our tutors teaching multiple subjects, so it’s possible to get tuition in different subjects from the same tutor. This also gives the advantage of flexible lesson structure, allowing tutors to spend more time on subjects the student is struggling in, or has upcoming assessments for. Check out our subject list for the subjects we offer.
Do your tutors know the curriculum and how to tutor?
Most of our tutors are current university students and have recently gone through the schooling system, including NCEA, Cambridge, and International Baccalaureate® (IB). They all achieved excellent results in both high school and university, and have gone through an interview process. They were chosen based on their tutoring approach and experience, academic achievements, and their passion for helping the next generation of students.
Where do you tutor? Can you tutor at my home?
Jump Start tutors all around Christchurch, and offers options of home tuition or tuition in a public library or University of Canterbury library - whichever works for you! You can see the list of public libraries or University of Canterbury libraries here.
What about outside of Christchurch? Can I do distance tuition?
Yes! We offer distance tuition through Zoom, so we can offer tutoring anywhere in New Zealand.
Can I have one-on-one or group tutorials?
Yes! Jump Start Tutoring provides tutoring one-on-one, or in groups of two or three. One-on-one tuition provides focused, tailored tuition, where group tuition is particularly good for friends taking the same subjects, so they can discuss the material together with the guidance of a tutor. It can also be good for siblings who are self-starters - the tutor can address questions of each student and assign them problems or questions to work on while giving the other individual attention.
Do you organise the group for a group tutoring?
Students tend to learn better together when they know each other, and there’s no guarantee that students looking for group tuition would be learning the same content. Group tuition can be effective as it allows for the ability to discuss ideas and engage with each other while learning. For this reason, we prefer that students find their own groups for group tuition.
It’s most beneficial if students are in the same class at school, or seperate classes but learning the same subject. But siblings or friends of different years who need specific help rather than tutor-led tuition may also benefit from group tutorials, as it gives them time to work through problems and questions by themselves while the tutor focuses on the other student, and vice versa.
How long is a tutorial?
Tutorials go for a minimum of an hour, but can go for any length of time in increments of half an hour. 90 minute or 2 hour tutorials are quite common, especially where multiple subjects are being tutored. Many students also choose to do longer revision sessions leading up to the exams, especially where they are sitting a number of papers in a subject, or have not had tutoring the whole way through the year and want to focus on catching up on papers they may have studied before tutoring began.
Jump Start recommends an hour per subject during tutorials, especially at NCEA levels 1-3 where the content students need to learn starts ramping up.
How often are tutorials?
As often as you’d like. Most students prefer weekly tutorials as it helps to stay on top of their subjects, prepare for tests and internal assessments, and make sure parts of the subject or paper aren’t forgotten about. For these students, we recommend the ongoing plan or term plan, which schedule tutorials on a weekly basis. Often, students choose to increase tutorials in terms 3 and 4 as they begin to prepare for their end of year exams - this can be either longer individual tutorials, or multiple tutorials a week.
However, we offer casual tutorials for students who just need occasional help, or want to go over the subject content before a test, internal assessment, or exam. Casual tutorials attract a small additional charge, and we may not be able to guarantee your usual tutor, though we will try our best!
What about fortnightly tutorials?
Unfortunately fortnightly tutorials are too difficult and inconvenient for our tutors, so ongoing and term plan tutorials are scheduled on a weekly basis. If weekly tutorials don't work for you, we offer casual tutorials.
Can I get tutoring during the school holidays?
Yes! School holidays are a great chance to catch up on schoolwork and get started on post-topic revision to keep that knowledge fresh!
But if you'd rather take a break from tutoring, there's no oblication to continue your weekly tutorials during school holidays or on public holidays.
How much do tutorials cost?
Tutorials start from $30 per hour. Check out our plans and pricing here.
